How to Keep Your Eyes Safe from the Computer Screen

Updated: Nov 21, 2022

You don't usually think about computer eye strain, but when it happens to you, it's hard to ignore.

Protecting your eyes from computer screens and phones is more important than ever, but the best way to solve the problem is to stop it from happening in the first place.

In this post, we'll talk about a few simple ways to protect your eyes from computer screens and smartphones.

1. Use The 20/20/20 Rule

Our eyes were not made to look at one thing all day long. The 20/20/20 rule gives your eyes a lot of rest during long days at work.

If you look at a screen for 20 minutes straight, take a break for 20 seconds and look at something at least 20 feet away. But the healthier you are, the less you look at your computer screen.

2. Make sure your room has enough light.

When working on a computer, it may seem counterintuitive, but less light in your room is better for your eyes. To keep your office from being too bright, close your curtains and use fluorescent lighting less.

Make sure your lighting is about half as bright as the average office by using bulbs with less power.

3. Have Regular Eye Exams

Regular eye exams will help you keep track of your eye health and make sure that your problems aren't caused by something more serious than just normal eye strain. Talking to an expert about your habits and eye health is also a great idea.

4. Reduce Glare

Glare on your computer screen can cause eye strain because it makes it take your eyes longer to adjust to what you're trying to focus on.

If feasible, use a matte anti-glare screen (rather than glass-covered LCDs). If you wear glasses, make sure they don't reflect light back at you.

5. Use High-Resolution Screens

The majority of people no longer need to use CRT screens. Those were the old computer screens with low refresh rates that made your eyes hurt and flickered.

The refresh rate of modern screens is at least 75Hz. The number is better the higher it is. Also, screens with a higher resolution look more alive. When you can't see the pixels, your eyes don't have to work as hard to make sense of what you're seeing.

6. Reduce Blue Light

The wavelength of blue light is shorter, and it has been linked to eye damage. You can cut down on blue light by wearing special glasses or lowering the color temperature of your screen. It can be used for a long time.

Blue light can be lessened with some software for the PC. I've been using this software for two years, and in that time I've found that three of its features work very well.

All of them cost money, but I'll show you how to use them for free.

Iris Pro Blue light filter

Iris Pro Blue light Filter

Iris is a piece of software that makes monitors better for your eyes. For Eye Protection, you can use a Blue Light Filter and a Screen Dimmer to cut down on the amount of Blue Light your computer screen gives off.

How does Iris work?

Iris reduces your exposure to blue light by making your laptop or computer screen give off less blue light.

And, as we've already said, one of the most interesting things about Iris is that it can be set up in three ways:

  1. Automatic

  2. Manual

  3. Paused

Automatic

The level of blue light is set automatically based on your clock and where you are.

For example, during the day, your screen will be brighter and give off more blue light. At night, the screen will be darker and give off less blue light.

This will, in a way, make the brightness settings more in tune with nature and allow hormones to react in a more natural way.

What a great thought!

This is the mode to choose if you don't want to change the settings by hand and just want Iris to "do her thing."

Manual

In manual mode, the settings for nighttime are always used. This means that the blue light and brightness levels are always lowered, no matter what time of day it is.

This is helpful if you work in a dark room with no natural light or if you always want less blue light and brightness.

Paused

In Paused mode, Iris doesn't change the colors and your screen goes back to how it was before you installed Iris.

This is helpful if you're making a graphic and don't want the colors to change, or if you're watching a movie and want the best visual experience possible.

Remember that Iris is off in Paused mode, so there is no Blue light protection.

Automatic is my favorite setting because it's easy and I like that Iris does the work for me.

It’s truly a game-changer.

Iris Features:

Iris has 11 pre-set templates in addition to these three modes. Depending on which one you choose, the amount of light on your screen will change.

These types are:

  1. Health

  2. Sleep

  3. Gaming

  4. Reading

  5. Overlay

  6. Custom

  7. Programming

  8. Biohacker

  9. Sunglasses

  10. Dark

  11. Movie

For example, if you were playing games on your laptop, you would choose the Gaming type, which optimizes the light levels for gaming.

If you were going to sleep soon, you would choose the Sleep mode, which reduces the amount of blue light as much as possible.

It's a great feature, in my opinion.

CareUEyes - Blue light Filter

CareUEyes is a blue light filter and eye protection software for PCs that automatically adjusts the brightness of the display and prompts you to take breaks at regular intervals.

How to filter blue light?

All computers emit blue light. For the sake of their eyes, their overall health, and their productivity, people who spend long hours in front of a computer should absolutely make use of the blue light filter that is available for personal computers.

CareUEyes is a blue light filter for computers that reduces eye strain by limiting the amount of blue light emitted by the display. This is accomplished by adjusting the color temperature of the display. You have the ability to modify the amount of blue light that is emitted from your screen based on various settings, such as the game mode, reading mode, editing mode, and so on.

The color temperatures are adjusted differently depending on the time of day using the blue light filter for a personal computer. Your eyes will have time to gradually adjust as the color temperature will smoothly transition from night to daylight as dusk and early morning arrive. The color temperature should be adjusted so that it corresponds to the light in your room during the day, and then it should be adjusted so that it corresponds to the light outside during the night. In addition to acting as a filter for blue light, CareUEyes also includes an option to dim the screen. Eye strain and visual impairment can be brought on by displays that are either excessively bright or excessively dark. CareUEyes eliminates the apparent flicker of the display backlight, which is the root cause of eye strain and headaches in computer users.

Utilizing software as a filter against blue light is the method that is both the most effective and the most cost-effective. It is no longer necessary to wear blue light glasses or use film with a blue light filter in order to filter blue light. In addition to being consumable, they also lack any degree of adaptability.

I believe the blue light filter for your computer is the most reasonable choice for you to make.
